Our reputation has been built over many years since the 1930's and is based on quality, choice and personal service. Our customer relationships are long term with many customers choosing us to supply their Caravans and Motorhomes time and time again.
It all began back in 1926...
Yorkshire Caravan’s founder, Percy Smith, originally owned a petrol station in Sheffield in 1926. He was asked by a customer, if it would be possible to store the families caravan for a week or two. The caravan, on the forecourt, created so much interest, that Percy, who was one never to miss an opportunity, contacted the Manufacturer who agreed to supply him with caravans on a sale or return basis.
Percy sold his first 3 units, and in 1931 decided to relocate to Bawtry, purchasing 2 acres of land on the Great north Road between Bawtry and Doncaster – the exact spot where you’ll find us today!
Percy built up the reputation and was selling over 300 caravans a year trading as Yorkshire Caravan and Trailer Company.
Helping the Second World War effort
During the Second World War, part of the dealership was used as an evacuee centre for children who had left their city homes, for refuge during The Blitz. It was a difficult time but in the years that followed, caravan sales increased and the company went from strength to strength.
Keeping it in the family
In 1950, Percy, was joined in the business by his son Derek, who went on to assume responsibility for the business and began the pivotal transformation into one of the most well known caravan industry businesses of its time.
Can we 'ave one Dad?
Affectionately known as “Mr Smith”, Derek was also famous for introducing some of the best caravan franchises in the industry, as well as the old 1980’s famous TV advertising slogans “Can we ‘ave one Dad?”.
It memorably introduced caravanning to the wider market, with the likes of Geoff Capes, Jim Bowen and Terry Scott endorsing it, by playing their part in the campaign.

Company Expansion
Jon Joins Yorkshire Caravans!
In 1999, Jon Goulden, Step-son to Derek, joined the company and worked alongside his mother, Jan Smith.
Appointed in 2008 as Managing Director, Jon has continued to expand Yorkshire Caravans into what it is today.
YC Goes Online and Converts a Warehouse
In 2014 Yorkshire Caravans began trading online, selling key caravan accessories through their brand new eCommerce venture.
It was also during this time that one of the onsite warehouses was converted into one of the North’s largest caravan showrooms.

October 2019 saw the introduction of the caravan storage facility. A dedicated storage space for over 1200 caravans and motorhomes, protected by CCTV security, automated barrier entry points, charge points and caravan wash bay facility. The site was accredited with CaSSoa Gold and is open 7 days a week for pickups and drop-offs.
Yorkshire Caravans Marks 90 Years in Bawtry
In 2021 Yorkshire Caravans reached their 90th anniversary, at our Bawtry site.
90 years since Percy purchased the land here in Bawtry, and we are so glad he did.
Motorhomes Land in 2023
In Late 2023, Yorkshire Caravans transformed into Yorkshire Caravans & Motorhomes with the arrival of the brand new Bailey Motorhomes. Alongside this we grew our pre-owned offering and began trading as an official motorhome stockist. Fast forward to today and we now have a dedicated motorhome sales office with a specialised team and a large selection of new and pre-owned motorhomes on display.

Our Motorhome Centre earned national recognition when it was awarded Highly Commended in the public vote at the Out & About Live Motorhome Awards 2026. The award celebrated our position as one of the UK’s most trusted destinations for new and pre-owned motorhomes and campervans, supported by exceptional choice, value and customer service.
As the UK’s largest Bailey retailer and part of our 34-acre touring destination, we proudly welcomed customers from across the country and helped them find the right motorhome for their needs. Their votes counted, achieveing us this incredible award.
This achievement reflects our commitment to raising standards and enhancing the motorhome buying experience across the UK.
Elddis, Buccaneer & Xplore Join the Motorhome Line-up
In January 2026, Yorkshire Caravans & Motorhomes expanded its motorhome line-up with the introduction of Elddis, Buccaneer and Xplore, three respected British brands, backed by the Erwin Hymer Group, known for craftsmanship, practicality and value. The first models were delivered to the Motorhome Centre and the initial response from customers was overwhelmingly positive. Further models are arriving throughout the season, strengthening the choice available for buyers and supporting the continued growth of our business. The addition of these new brands marked an exciting step in broadening our range, and our team look forward to the impact Elddis, Buccaneer and Xplore will have as part of our Motorhome Center’s national offering.

A 25 Year Partnership with Bailey of Bristol
25 fantastic years working in partnership with Bailey of Bristol, one of the UK’s most respected leisure vehicle manufacturers. Since first becoming a Bailey caravan retailer in 2001, the relationship has grown far beyond a simple business arrangement, developing into a long-standing partnership built on shared values of quality, innovation, and customer care.
Over the past quarter of a century, we have proudly supplied Bailey caravans to thousands of happy customers, and in 2023 we were delighted to take the next exciting step by welcoming our very first new Bailey motorhomes to the showroom. Celebrating 25 years of working together is not only a reflection of successful business, but also of the strong friendships and mutual trust built along the way, a partnership we look forward to continuing for many years to come.

Yorkshire Caravans & Motorhomes Ltd has entered a new chapter after 100 years of family ownership, following its acquisition by local entrepreneur Jason Cooper.
Founded in 1926, the business has grown into one of the UK’s largest independent retailers of caravans, motorhomes and leisure accessories. Operating from its 34-acre site near Bawtry, the company generates annual revenues exceeding £50 million and serves customers nationwide.
The sale marks a significant milestone, coming exactly a century after the company was established.
Looking to the future
The site today offers customers the chance to browse, at their leisure, our range of new and used motorhomes and caravans, visit our awnings department and leisure shop, book their caravan or motorhome in for servicing and aftercare, store their vehicles in our dedicated storage facility or just pop in and enjoy a tasty breakfast or lunch in our onsite café.
